Intussusception is a medical condition that occurs when one segment of the intestine slides into another section, causing a telescoping or invagination of the intestine. This condition is most commonly observed in children, particularly infants between the ages of 6 months and 2 years. However, it can also affect adults, albeit less frequently.
Intussusception typically starts with the telescoping of part of the small intestine into another section, leading to a blockage and impeding the smooth flow of food, fluids, and waste through the digestive system. This obstruction can result in severe pain, cramping, and abdominal swelling. It may also cause bloody stools, vomiting, and a general feeling of being unwell.
The exact cause of intussusception is often unknown, but it can be triggered by intestinal tumors, inflammation, or certain medical conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract. In children, it is sometimes associated with viral infections, such as rotavirus.
If left untreated, intussusception can lead to tissue damage, infection, and reduced blood flow to the affected area. Prompt medical intervention is crucial to restore the normal position of the intestine and alleviate the associated symptoms. Treatment options may include nonsurgical procedures, such as an air or liquid enema to dislodge the telescoped intestine, or in severe cases, surgical intervention may be required to correct the condition.
