A renal pyramid is a conical-shaped structure found in the kidney that is a fundamental component of the renal medulla. It is a part of the kidney responsible for the production of urine and the regulation of water and electrolyte balance in the body.
Each kidney contains several renal pyramids, typically around 8 to 18, depending on the species. These triangular pyramid-like structures are arranged in a radial pattern, with their bases facing the outer edges of the kidney and their tips pointing towards the hilum, the indented center of the kidney. Renal pyramids are composed of tiny structures called nephrons, which are the functional units responsible for the filtration and reabsorption of waste products, water, and electrolytes.
The innermost part of the renal pyramid, called the papilla, forms a funnel-shaped structure that projects into the renal pelvis, collecting the urine produced by the nephrons. The urine then flows through the renal pelvis into the ureter and finally to the bladder for excretion.
The arrangement of the renal pyramids and their associated nephrons allows for efficient urine production and the regulation of body fluids. They play a crucial role in maintaining proper electrolyte balance, pH regulation, and maintaining blood pressure. Any disruption or damage to the renal pyramids can impair kidney function and lead to various renal disorders.

Etymology of RENAL PYRAMID
