RSH SLO syndromes, also known as RSH or RSH/SLO syndrome, are a group of rare genetic disorders characterized by the presence of three distinct symptoms: intellectual disability, spastic paraplegia, and thinning of the corpus callosum.
Intellectual disability refers to significant limitations in cognitive functioning and adaptive behaviors, which can impact an individual's ability to learn, reason, and communicate effectively. Spastic paraplegia refers to the stiffness and tightness (spasticity) of the muscles in the lower limbs, resulting in difficulty in walking and controlling leg movements. Thinning of the corpus callosum refers to the partial or complete absence of the bundle of nerve fibers that connects the two hemispheres of the brain, which can lead to various neurological manifestations.
The syndrome is typically inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning that an affected individual must inherit two copies of the mutated gene - one from each parent. The specific genetic cause of RSH SLO syndromes is not yet fully understood, although several genes have been identified to be associated with this condition.
The onset and severity of symptoms can vary widely among affected individuals, even among members of the same family. Additional features that may be present include seizures, speech difficulties, unusually small head size (microcephaly), and abnormalities in muscle tone.
