The League consisted of England, the Dutch Republic, Spain, Sweden, the Austrian Habsburgs, Bavaria, and certain German states. Their primary objective was to check the growing power of France and defend the balance of power in Europe.
The conflict was characterized by a series of major battles, including the Battles of Fleurus, Steenkerque, and Neerwinden. The war escalated with the Nine Years' War in Ireland and various naval operations, notably the Battle of Beachy Head and the Battle of La Hougue. Eventually, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697, which restored most of the conquered territories and established a balance of power in Europe.
