The term "zoanthid" encompasses over 1,500 known species, varying in size, shape, and coloration.
Zoanthids typically form colonies by attaching themselves to hard surfaces such as rocks or coral skeletons. Each colony is composed of numerous individual polyps, which are interconnected by a shared tissue called coenenchyme. These polyps have tubular or cup-shaped bodies, surrounded by a circular ring of tentacles armed with stinging cells called nematocysts. The relationship between the zoanthid and the zooxanthellae is mutually beneficial, as the algae provide the polyps with energy through photosynthesis, while the zoanthids offer shelter and obtain essential nutrients from their photosynthetic partners.
